Lawrence Monks - Mentor

The art of tutoring has some very deep historical roots that go as far back as ancient times. Socrates, for example, was a tutor and his pupil, Aristotle, was the tutor of Alexander the Great. In essence, tutoring is an extremely historical method of learning and teaching.

One benefit of tutoring is to provide a one-on-one approach to the student who can easily get lost in a large classroom. A tutor works directly with the one student to provide exactly what he or she needs in order to grasp lessons in a whole new way that is brings meaning and understanding to him or her.

Further, the tutor can provide a greater meaning for learning a subject matter to the specific student. Finding a value and purpose in education is an important step for a student to move beyond his or her perceived "bored" or "disinterest" stage of today's primary education model.

My name is Lawrence Monks and I have a Masters in Liberal Arts from the University of St. Thomas in Houston, TX. So, what does this mean? Well, the Liberal Arts go back to the Ancient Greeks who considered a liberal arts education to be the ultimate mark of an educated person. OK, so what are the liberal arts? Well, the liberal arts include grammar, rhetoric and logic, which are collectively known as the trivium. But wait! There's more. The liberal arts also contain arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy. Together, these four are named the quadrivium. The aim of a liberal arts education is to combine the trivium and quadrivium to produce a person who was virtuous and ethical, knowledgeable in many fields and highly articulate. As one can see, it is easy to transfer knowledge gained from a liberal arts background to apply to almost everyone of today's academic subjects.

In short, I provide personalized, affordable and effective in-home and online tutoring. My experience as a teacher and tutor ensures that you have a qualified, knowledgeable and patient tutor for your son or daughter.

I am a Safe Haven certified teacher through the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. I am also a certified life coach for young adults. Included with my tutoring service is the "Positive Outlook Program" from my Bonfire Young Adult Coaching program. I gear this program specifically for a student's general age so he or she will grow in confidence as he or she advances.
